McLaren Vale small batch winery Alpha Box & Dice (AB&D) are embarking on an ‘Alphabet of Wine’, where every letter of the alphabet represents a
different wine style. The next letter to be released, and their first new
addition to the alphabet since December 2015, is Lazarus, a NV Ripasso.

The wine will be launched at Melbourne’s award-winning Smith & Daughters, the popular Fitzroy restaurant known for its unexpected take on vegetarian cuisine, in a ticketed event on Monday September 25.

Smith & Daughters Head Chef Shannon Martinez has invited the Head Chef of Adelaide’s much-celebrated African-inspired restaurant Africola, Duncan Welgemoed, to collab on a finger food menu specifically to match
Lazarus and the other wines in AB&D’s alphabet.

The event will see Smith & Daughters transformed for cocktail style dining, favoured over a sit-down dinner to help the party flow. Tickets will include food, some drinks, with further drinks available over the bar.
A fully immersive party experience is promised, with specially-created food, cocktails and collaborative T-shirts and merchandise.

The name Lazarus takes its inspiration from the Biblical story of Lazarus
being raised from the dead, but also how the wine was made. AB&D Head
Winemaker Sam Berketa passed old vintage wine over fresh grape skins,
allowing the older wine to absorb the vitality and flavours. Traditionally,
Ripasso wines are made where new wine is washed over already fermented grape skins. This twist on a traditional Ripasso results in an intriguing blend of flavours and characteristics found in both old and young wines.
